Oxygen and Hydrogen Analysis of Solids by TC/EA-IRMS
Sample types
SIRFER provides measurement of hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) isotope ratios of organic and inorganic solid materials using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) coupled to a high temperature conversion elemental analyzer (TC/EA) and operated in continuous flow (CF) mode. Sample preparation For analysis of solid (organic or inorganic) samples for δ2H and/or δ18O analysis, a 0.1-0.2 mg aliquot of the sample is accurately weighed into a pre-baked silver capsule. Note- researchers interested in hydrogen isotope in non-keratin* materials can weigh their samples in baked silver capsules (part no. 041066 from Costech Analytical) and ship to the SIRFER lab. Researchers interested in hydrogen isotope in keratin materials must send the bulk samples to the SIRFER lab. Hydrogen in solid samples is susceptible to exchange with ambient water vapor and this fraction can be substantial even up to 30%. Therefore, to analyze D/H in Keratin samples the samples and the keratin reference materials are equilibrate for at least 48 hours before encapsulated in baked silver capsules (Chesson et al., 2010) *Please contact SIRFER manager (sirfer@utah.edu) prior to sample preparation to confirm if we can accept your non-keratin samples. Samples should be shipped to SIRFER as described here. A request for analysis and sample ID list should be emailed to us at the time of shipping.
