SIRFER
Stable Isotope Ratio Facility for Environmental Research

SIRFER provides H, C, N, O, and S stable isotope ratio analyses on both organic and inorganic samples. We serve investigators in anthropology, biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, and medicine. SIRFER provides research support to the University of Utah community, and offers the same quality analytical services to those from outside the university.
We have a strong commitment to secondary, undergraduate, and graduate level training, ranging from one-on-one training for students who wish to conduct their own analyses to coursework support and outreach activities.

News!

SIRFER supports NEON
For the past three years SIRFER has been assisting the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) by providing analysis of water samples from across the country. SIRFER has recently expanded its role and will also provide characterization of aquatic algal samples for NEON.

SIRFER is...

Facilities & Services

Since 1986, SIRFER has operated as an open facility that provides stable isotope ratio analyses. SIRFER is equipped with multiple isotope ratio mass spectrometers and isotope ratio infrared spectrometers capable of providing bulk and trace gas analyses.
SIRFER is committed to providing high quality sample preparation and analysis, using the latest technology and performed by expert research staff, in support of science and management across a wide range of fields.

Education & Outreach

SIRFER is also an educational and training facility. We provide a series of summer courses to complement the undergraduate classes in stable isotope biogeochemistry and ecology offered during the academic year.
From 8th graders measuring isotopes in the food they eat, to undergraduates in an organic gardening class measuring isotopes of foods they grow, SIRFER helps expand public interest in science. Young minds learn the excitement of science by doing.
